Care for the environment has always been important to me, I am inspired by landscape and places so feel I have a duty of care towards them.In Summer 2002 I was asked to write a short article for Eco Design - The Journal of the Ecological Design Association. The research and writing of this article led me to question whether or not designing and making more 'stuff' was sustainable and I eventually, after a lot of soul searching, came to the conclusion that it was provided thatI attempt to ensure that materials I use come from sustainable sources and are manufactured in ways that minimise their impact upon the environment. When dealing with the mining and processing of precious metals this is probably the most difficult issue, and one that it is not yet possible to resolve in a completely satisfactory way - but hopefully with increased awareness will be soon. I work using methods that minimise waste. For a jeweller this is probably the strongest area of sustainable practice as every time scrap of metal dust is carefully stored and reprocessed, the metals I use such as silver, gold, copper and aluminium are infinately recyle-able. I work using substances that are not difficult to dispose of and do not create excessive danger to health or the local environment, for example I do not use strong acids or corrosive substances that would be dangerous to my local environment if they leaked out or were spilled. Ultimately I hope that the objects I create will be valued, cared for and have meaning to the people who acquire or wear them and that they will have a long lifespan. Most of my work is very small in scale and I am able to obtain materials and send work out in the post - so, although I hope that some of it will travel quite long distances, perhaps as special gifts or mementoes, the impact of these journeys will be small. Some of the photographs that follow and in other sections of this site will show my local landscape and I hope that you will be able to see why it is so important to me that it is used carefully and protected for the future.
